We stepped out into the main concourse that looked so much like something from the Deep Space Nine. God I missed that show. It was a damn shame I didn’t have rips of it on my computer when I was abducted out into the wider galaxy. I’d have to return to earth someday and pick up copies of the stuff.

Assuming the place hadn’t been turned into either an irradiated wasteland or a desert wasteland where everything was too hot for people to live, given the two most likely end of the world scenarios that were being kicked around back when I’d left the place.

On second thought, maybe it was a good thing I got off that planet before the potential effects of the numerous self-induced Great Filters that a civilization could smack into took me along with the rest of the species.

The riot was still going on, which was a surprise.

“Huh. I guess they’re more interested in fighting one another than they are in saving themselves,” I grunted.

“Most of them live on this plate,” Tera said. “It’s their home. I mean can you imagine what it must feel like for somebody to build their whole life somewhere, and then an invasion fleet shows up and the next thing you know the place you’ve worked and slaved to create is gone in the flash of plasma turrets from…”

“Okay,” I growled. “I get the guilt trip you’re trying to hit me with, but I’m not going to…”

Screams came from the opposite end of the concourse and interrupted my train of thought. Those screams were genuinely terrified. Not good. Screams probably meant there was someone trying to land around here, and…

Sure enough, Levonian armored troops came moving down the concourse blasting at anything and everything that got in their way. Which was a problem for everyone close to the Levonian troops, considering there were a lot of people falling all over each other to try and get away from the bastards, but they weren’t being given much of a chance to make their escape.

No, the Levonians were firing into them indiscriminately, and I got the feeling if we stuck around then that wave of aliens was going to eventually trap us, and there’d be nothing left to do but wait for the Levonians to get to us and mow us down.

“We need to get out of here, and now,” I growled.

“Any idea where we’re supposed to go?” Seleya said, her eyes wide as she watched the Levonians indiscriminately killing. “And how are they able to do that? Treaties with mother state that alien species who maintain their own militaries are required to uphold life whenever and wherever possible, and…”

“And you think your mother or the Levonian queen really give a fuck about the sanctity of life versus getting a little revenge on the pirate that humiliated them?” I asked. “Take a good look at what’s going on behind us, princess, because that’s the way the galaxy works.”

“But it’s not supposed to work like that,” she whispered.
